At the beginning of 2020, at the time of the outburst of the coronavirus pandemic, a group of artists participating to Rava vavàra accepted to start a collective endeavor to create a unique sound artwork. The restrictions needed to contain the contagion started in Italy, this is why Eva Macali, the first day of the lockdown in Rome, felt it necessary to initiate a project resonating in all Europe and beyond.
The all is one comes from an old inscription, the famous Chrysopoeia, attributed to Cleopatra the Alchemist, a Greek alchemist, author, and philosopher in Alexandria of Egypt. She experimented with practical alchemy but is also credited as one of the four female alchemists who could produce the philosopher's stone. Some writers consider her to be the inventor of the alembic, a distillation apparatus.
The moment was very dramatic, and at the basis of the process of creation there was the will to extend practices and connections between artists located in different places and belonging to different art domains and traditions. The participating artists felt a similar need for unity in the emergency, even if the contagion was spreading unevenly.
Honouring the Chrysopoeia, the collective sound-work took the shape of a loop, i.e. a piece that can be infinitely listened to without identifying when it starts and when it ends.
The possibility of producing a collective work that was more than the simple matching of individual artworks was at the core of the experiment as well as the idea that a number of authors contributing to a single artwork can give birth to something different that the sum of the individual contributions.
